'A love of ‘old china, especially earthenware’: ceramics at Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top and in her ‘little books’

Abstract
This paper touches upon a few different aspects of Beatrix Potter's relationship to ceramics. It considers their use in her artworks, including her own experimentation with clay. It then describes the collection of ceramics that Beatrix amassed at Hill Top, including what we know (and don't know) about how this collection was formed and how she used ceramics within its interiors. Finally, it examines pieces from her collection that are used in the illustrations for two of her favourite books, 'The Tailor of Gloucester' and 'The Tale of the Pie and the Patty Pan'.
