Managing managed realignment of an exposed coastal shoreline

Abstract
The shoreline management policy of managed realignment has been slowly gaining acceptability. In the United Kingdom, approximately 3% of shoreline management units have been identified for realignment, and 30-40 schemes have been developed (Harvey et al., 2003). Most of these sites are within estuaries. Examples of managed realignment on the open coast are still rare. This paper examines one such site at Studland Bay, Dorset, England. At Studland, the landowner, the National Trust, has set out to achieve a shoreline that does not require active management or intervention. The intention is to provide a natural sustainable setting, removing existing defences and (where necessary) buildings and infrastructure. The aim of the study was to develop a workable plan for managing the realignment. In addition, the National Trust wishes to promote the Studland Bay site as a case study for development of national guidance for natural shoreline management.
