Abstract
The creation of thousands of public parks, owned municipally and free to enter, was one of the great civic achievements of the Victorian era and one of its great legacies to the present. This paper provides a summary history of the development of public parks in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, describing an arc in which most parks suffered a post-war decline. To bring the story up to date it will conclude with an account of their renaissance since the mid-1990s and some discussion of the further decline which now threatens.
