Abstract
Organic coatings slow down, but do not stop, this behaviour. Ivory is particularly quick to respond to changes in humidity and the application of water and solvents due to the fine tubes (tubules) which penetrate it throughout. Thin pieces of ivory are much more sensitive to humidity changes than thick pieces and even the moisture from handling can be enough to cause them to warp.
