Abstract

The use of volunteers in garden archaeology raises a number of issues. In addressing them, this paper will survey the scope of garden archaeology as it is being applied within the National Trust, review the philosophies, requirements and initial briefs of garden projects developed by the Trust as both curator and client, and consider the development of more detailed specifications where appropriate. The potential for using volunteers is raised at all stages of project planning, and a series of examples will illustrate the successes or difficulties encountered in using them. The paper will conclude with some suggested guidelines.
